Kanye West has left the building and we’ve now welcomed a marketing whore that has trademarked the Kardashian name to stay relevant and popular. Take a look at his journey from humble beginnings to becoming the biggest sell out in Hip-Hop…

‘The College Dropout’ was the first album I had ever purchased. Kanye built a backstory of his life growing up in Chicago, and exploring the racial segregation and socioeconomic difficulties in America. He penned open letters to God for guidance, discussed producing beats in his bedroom and opened up about surviving a horrific and life changing car accident. This album was critically acclaimed for its raw substance, social commentary and religious context. Kanye became an icon and was put in the same category as Hip-Hop legends such as Public Enemy, Tupac Shakur, Eminem, Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill. My favourite tracks on the album are All Falls Down, Family Business, Jesus Walks, Through the Wire and Last Call.

During a lI’ve national televised fundraising event for victims of Hurricane Katrina, Kanye West bashed the media, government and specifically President Bush for their lack of support for victims in New Orleans. Kanye looked directly at the camera and said, “I hate the way they portray us in the media … if you see a black family, it says they’re looting. If you see a white family, it says they’re searching for food … it’s been five days, because most of the people are black. And even for me to complain about it, I would be a hypocrite because I’ve tried to turn away from the TV, because it’s too hard to watch.” He then went on to say the classic line, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people”. Many people praised Kanye for speaking on this issue live on TV and directly asking why President Bush hadn’t done enough for those suffering in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. President Bush later wrote in his memoir that this moment was an all-time low of his presidency. Click here to view the video.

Also in 2005, the Hip-Hop legend appeared on The Live 8 Concert tour, which was to raise awareness of AIDS. Live on TV Kanye announced that, “AIDS is a man-made disease that was placed in Africa just like crack was placed in the black community to break up the Black Panthers.” This was an incredibly insensitive time to announce his views on AIDS when the event was to spread awareness of how to avoid the infection. Hundreds of people complained and were disappointed that he used it as a selfish opportunity to promote ‘The Kanye Show’. His comments were misguided, inconsiderate and steered away from the purpose of the event.

We all remember the disastrous moment at the VMAs in 2009 where Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift’s award speech shouting, “Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’ma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!” Here Kanye unmasked his super egotistical and narcissistic behaviour in thinking that as a creative individual he has the right to disrupt another credible artist’s acceptance speech. Everyone in the industry refers to this as the moment that made Taylor famous… when in actual fact it made “Kanye The Asshole”. This wasn’t the first time Kanye jumped on stage to make it about himself either. In 2008 he invaded the EMA stage after his Touch The Sky music video lost to J.U.S.T.I.C.E for Video of the Year. Clearly a sore loser, Kanye wanted to remind viewers that his video “cost a million dollars fam…“. In 2015 he nearly interrupted Beck’s acceptance speech when he pretended to walk on stage for another Kanye moment. People found his prank light-hearted and comical, however Kanye later said he was frustrated that Beck won over Beyonce for Album of the Year. You can tell Kanye has no clue about true talent and artist creativity – Beck produced, wrote and performed every track and instrument on his album, whereas Queen Bey has 40 different producers and writers for a 10 track album. Kanye and Taylor

I have no issue with Kanye marrying Kim Kardashian, what’s puzzling is the over-controlling fashion decisions he makes for his wife and encouraging her to take nude photo-shoots to ‘break the internet’. He’s clearly linked with her to stay relevant and to create an ideology of a ‘power couple’. They geographically name their children, making sure it matches their WEST trademark. The more ridiculous the name the more likely it is to keep them in the headlines, trending on social media… and means another season of Keeping up with the Kardashians. Again, I have no issue with nude photoshoots being used to empower someone to feel more confident about their body, however I do have an issue with this tag-team claiming they want to live a life of privacy, but then going to extreme lengths to break the internet for attention. I think we can all agree, we’ve seen Kim’s naked ass enough times…

In 2013 Kanye had another aggressive rant by bugging out on radio host Sway, as they discussed their frustrations with the corporate structure of the fashion world and the lack of support from big fashion houses. When Sway calmly questioned why Kanye doesn’t fund his label himself? Kanye completely lost it, screaming live, “How Sway? You ain’t got the answers, man! You ain’t got the answers. I’ve been doing this more than you; you ain’t got the answers!” Again Kanye hit headlines and fans cheered his aggressive and disrespectful behaviour by creating a number of hilarious internet memes on Instagram, Tumblr and Twitter. Click here to see Kanye lose it with Sway.

Reminding us of his narcissistic behaviour, in 2013 Kanye decided to name his sixth studio album ‘YEEZUS’, an unimaginative play on Jesus. The awful album has tracks like I Am A God, New Slaves and Black Skinhead in which he refers to himself as a God and compares himself to Jesus. Literally, this guy thinks he’s the Messiah? On the cover of Rolling Stone he did a photoshoot of him resembling Jesus and being crucified, which fuelled a lot of anger against him for blasphemously comparing himself to Jesus. The short, under-performed Yeezus phase shows Kanye doesn’t give a shit who he offends and does anything in his power to be controversial so we’ll talk about how stupid he has become. With all the ridiculous attention he receives, his ‘YEEZUS’ album continued with negative reviews and was labelled trash.

To conclude, I know it sounds like I’m bashing Kanye, but I am a fan of his music. However, I am disappointed; he started off with great music and messages at the start of his career but now he’s become an attention-seeking narcissistic asshole that makes trashy music and hits headlines for behaviour that we shouldn’t encourage. His latest album, ‘Life of Pablo’, was not artistic, he molds old Reggae, House and Hip-Hop beats together and barks, “Now if I fuck this model and she just bleached her asshole and I get bleach on my t-shirt I’ma feel like an asshole”. His music has lost its unique and raw credibility, so we’ve lost Kanye West… please welcome Kanye Kardashian.
